The Dallas Stars | Deeper Than You Might Think

On the Dallas Stars goalie depth chart sits Braden Holtby, Anton Khudobin, Ben Bishop, and Jake Oettinger. Plus Adam Scheel and Colton Point who have yet to play an NHL game.

Hey Heika: What does the future hold for Stars' goaltenders?

On paper, that is beyond excellent in terms of depth, and youth potential. Four of those guys not only have NHL experience, but also have proven themselves as very good goaltenders in the NHL.

Ben Bishop is still out after having knee surgery in the summer of 2020. He and the Stars are optimistic that he will be able to play some games this season. According to multiple sources, Bishop is skating but is working on getting strength back in the knee and regaining trust in that knee. There is no timetable for his return to the NHL.

Because of this, the Stars have more than enough defense in the crease. They could have had a fine season running Anton Khudobin and Jake Oettinger as their top two this year like they did last year, but for added measure, the Stars signed Braden Holtby after the Vancouver Canucks bought out the final year of his contract.

Until Bishop is back, Holtby and Khudobin will make a great tandem. Meanwhile there is still Jake Oettinger who has proven himself as an NHL goaltender by all standards. It is just a matter of how many games he will get in the NHL. He is currently down in the AHL with the Texas Stars but he will be an easy call-up if something happens.

With Colton Point and Adam Scheel also on the Texas Stars, they represent a promising future for Dallas. Both have done extremely well in the NCAA. Point will be going into his 4th pro season while Scheel is starting his first full season of professional hockey.

In terms of goaltending, the Stars are in a great place. They are almost hoarding the goaltending talent of the NHL with three NHL-capable goaltenders on payroll (four when Bishop gets game-ready). Thanks to that depth chart, they could do better than expected this year.
