Hi, it’s Aaron Truesdale and I’m back and ready to give you the fantasy advice you need for the upcoming NFL season. Also, I answer any fantasy questions you may have every Thursday morning through Sunday on Facebook under various fantasy football groups. Be sure to follow me on Twitter.
Now, let me tell you a little bit about my start/sit column. Each week I will be giving my top 3 starts & my top 3 sits at each position. There will be a start & sit of the week at each position with projections. My column will not include the automatic starters. Automatic starters are guys you don’t bench unless they’re injured or on a bye week. I am going to give 2 examples of automatic starters at each position. QB: Josh Allen & Patrick Mahomes, RB: Christian McCaffery & Dalvin Cook, WR: Tyreke Hill & Stefon Diggs, TE: Travis Kelce & George Kittle, K: Justin Tucker & Harrison Butker. For defenses, Pittsburgh Steelers & Los Angeles Rams. Now, I’ve added a twist to my article that will mention a sleeper of the week at each position who did not make my top 3 starters list. Also, a player that is most likely on the waiver wire that you can stream if you’re in a jam at a position. Let’s get it going with Week 5!
Kirk Cousins vs. DET
Projection: 30/38 | 363 YDS | 4 TDS
Cousins had a tough week against the Browns. This week he will bounce back and rip apart a skeptical Lions secondary. Cousins has insane weapons and is good enough to be your starting quarterback in fantasy football going forward.
Aaron Rodgers vs. CIN
Rodgers looks like the quarterback he has always been throughout his career. Now I know he is facing a Bengals defense that has been decent so far this year, but Rodgers will make the Bengals defense look silly and like the same old Bengals the fans have come to love.
Matt Ryan vs. NYJ
Ryan is a guy you won’t see here very often but he is playing a horrid Jets team and that is enough said on why to start Ryan.
Trey Lance vs. ARI
Projection: 12/28 | 210 YDS | 3 INTS | 11 CAR | 45 YDS | 1 TD | 1 FUM | 1 FL
Now I know there is word that Jimmy G has a chance to play this week, however, if he doesn’t, Lance will make his first career start. With that, fantasy owners will jump the gun and start Lance right away. Please don’t. Lance is up against a solid Cardinals defense, they will have him guessing most of the game, and they will put tons of pressure on him as well. So pump the brakes and avoid Lance this week.
Ryan Tannehill vs. JAX
Tannehill hasn’t been good at all this year even when he’s had Brown and Jones healthy and playing. This week there is still a chance he won’t have Brown or Jones and he should be avoided. Also, I believe Tannehill is droppable.
Joe Burrow vs. GB
Burrow had a good game last week but this week he is up against that elite Packers secondary. Also, the Packers’ pass rush has been getting better as the season goes on. Burrow won’t have much time to throw and when he does have time Burrow will have trouble finding open receivers.
Mac Jones vs. HOU
Jones looked great against the Buccaneers and he is developing more and more as the season progresses. Now, Jones gets the Texans and he could have the best game of his young career. So if you play matchup at quarterback, Jones is your man.
Damien Harris vs. HOU
Projection: 26 CAR | 116 YDS | 2 TDS | 8 REC | 66 YDS
Harris had one of his worst games last week against the shutdown Buccaneers run defense. Harris plays the Texans and their mediocre defense and he will have a big bounce-back game. Also, with White being done for the season, he will see more snaps in the passing game and that was proven last week. It will also elevate Harris’ fantasy football value.
Kareem Hunt vs. LAC
Hunt has had two great games in a row and this week he will have another explosion against a questionable Chargers run defense. Chubb will also have himself a good fantasy day. So both Browns running backs should be played this week without question.
Leonard Fournette vs. MIA
Fournette has established himself as the main back in Tampa and he will have his best game of the season against the Dolphins. Fournette will be more relied upon with Gronk out. Also, Fournette should be a mainstay in fantasy football lineups because he will be used more and more as the season progresses.
Antonio Gibson vs. NO
Projection: 12 CAR | 48 YDS | 6 REC | 32YDS
Gibson has not lived up to expectations this season and let’s face it McKissic has stolen some of his thunder. Saints have an excellent defense and Gibson will lay another egg this week. If you own Gibson you should consider picking up McKissic as a handcuff just in case Gibson would down with an injury.
Josh Jacobs vs. CHI
Jacobs finally got back on the football field against the Charger but he didn’t look 100% either. With Jacobs still nursing that ankle injury and facing a rock-solid Bears defense those are reasons enough to steer clear of Jacobs in fantasy football this week.
Chris Carson vs. LAR
Carson’s usage has gone down week by week because the Seahawks seem to be more of a pass-first team than a run-first team like they use to be. That spells trouble for Carson fantasy football owners. Now Carson faces the best run defense in the NFL. Also, Carson is nursing an injury. So add that to the list of reasons to bench Carson. So if you have a good option replace him with this week.
Damien Williams vs. LV
Montgomery is out for a few weeks so this is a no-brainer pick-up. He is available in almost all fantasy football leagues. Williams has proven in the past he can be 3 down running back. So pick him and start him against a suspect Raiders run defense.
Cordelle Patterson vs. NYJ
Projection: 6 REC | 98 YDS | 2 TDS | 5 CAR | 50 YDS
It is apparent now that Patterson is a focal point of the Falcons offense. It’s is time to no longer sleep on Patterson. This week in London he gets that terrible Jets defense and he will go off again this week. It’s time to start Patterson in all fantasy football lineups going forward.
Jaylen Waddle vs. TB
Tampa’s pass defense is in shambles and it is horrible. Waddle will have the best game of his young career. Dolphins won’t do much on the ground but they explode through the air. If you own a Dolphins wide receiver that isn’t injured start them this week you won’t regret it. Waddle will benefit the most though.
Kenny Golladay vs. DAL
Golladay had the best game of his Giants career. He plays a suspect Dallas defense and will build upon that game last week. Golladay will continue to benefit as long as Slayton and Shepard continue to be out.
Courtland Sutton vs. PIT
Projection: 3 REC | 21 YDS
Sutton had only one good game so far and now this week Lock will most likely be the Broncos starting quarterback due to Bridgewater having a concussion. Drew Lock won’t fair well against the devastating Steelers’ defense. The Bronco’s wide receivers won’t do well either.
Michael Pittman vs. BAL
Wentz has not been as good as advertised this season for the Colts because of that Pittman has been hit or miss from week to week he will be a miss this week because the Colts face that rock-solid Ravens defense Monday night.
Ja’Marr Chase vs. GB
There is a chance that Chase could draw Alexander in this contest which is why I am saying to sit Chase. Even if he doesn’t draw Alexander that Packers secondary is too good to take a chance on any Bengals wide receiver this week.
Cole Beasley vs. KC
Beasley is coming off one of the worst games of his career. Don’t be fooled if you need a wide receiver this week in fantasy football due to injury or you play matchups pick up and start Beasley. He will bounce back in a huge way against the Chiefs.
Robert Tonyan vs. CIN
Projection: 4 REC | 58 YDS | 2 TDS
Tonyan is hit or miss in the Packers offense this week he will be a big hit against the Bengals. The Bengals secondary is beaten up and Rodgers will expose that this week especially in the red zone with Tonyan.
Hunter Henry vs. HOU
Henry got a touchdown last week and he will have another this week against the Texans. Jones is getting better and better each week and as Jones gets better as will Henry’s fantasy football numbers. It is time to pick up and Henry in fantasy football and start him or stash him.
Kyle Pitts vs. NYJ
Pitts has been a huge disappointment this season so I am giving him one more chance to prove he will be worth a roster spot in fantasy football. Now I believe he will have a good game against the dismal Jets defense. If he does not have a good game it will be time to cut ties with Pitts in fantasy football.
Jared Cook vs. CLE
Projection: 5 REC | 44 YDS
Cook is a tight end to watch in fantasy football but this week he is up against a top-rated Browns defense. He will be held in check this week so avoid him. Cook is a guy you want to pick up and stash though because he will produce in other matchups this fantasy football season.
Noah Fant vs. PIT
Bridgewater is likely out with a concussion this week. So Fant is not going to be a good option against that stout Steelers defense due to Lock likely being the Broncos starting quarterback this week.
Dallas Goedert vs. CAR
That Panthers defense is one of the best in the NFL this season and it is time to stop thinking of this defense as a fluke because it is for real and making a statement. Goedert is hit or miss and he is a huge miss because the Panther’s defense is so good against tight ends.
Austin Hooper vs. LAC
The Charger’s defense is suspect against the run and decent against the pass but they tend to struggle versus tight ends in their pass defense. So if you play matchups at tight end or need a sleeper at the tight end position pick up and start Hooper he is in for a big game against the Chargers.
For Kickers and Defense. I’m only going to give a projection and an Explanation for the starts/sits of the week. The rest of the top 3 will just be listed with no explanation.
Matt Gay vs. SEA
Projection: 3 XPS | 2 FGS
This game could be a shootout but the Seattle defense will make a couple of stops for field goals. Between the extra points and field goals it will turn into a wonderful fantasy football day for Gay.
Matt Prater vs. SF
Jason Myers vs. LAR
Rodrigo Blankenship vs. BAL
Projection: 1 XP | 1 MXP | 2 MFGS
The Colts won’t score much against a good Ravens defense add on a few misses and that spells disaster for Blankenship.
Mason Crosby vs. CIN
Jason Sanders vs. TB
Greg Joesph vs. DET
If your looking for a kicker to stream this week I suggest going with Joesph because the Vikings will put up a lot of points against a struggling Lions defense. This means plenty of fantasy points for Joesph.
New England vs. Houston
Projection: 0 PTS | 189 YDS | 6 SKS | 3 INTS | 2 FF | 1 FR | 1 TD
Mills is still struggling with rookie woes at quarterback for the Texans but that is to be expected but it gets worse for Mills because now he has to face a Belichek defense which torments rookie QBS. With that said the Patriots defense is a no-brainer start this week.
Baltimore vs Indianapolis
Arizona vs. San Francisco
Buffalo vs. Kansas City
Projection: 34 PTS | 436 YDS | 2 SKS | 1 INT
Ok, let’s face this game is just going to be an explosive high scoring affair. For that reason alone avoid the Bills defense this week. By the way, avoid the Chiefs too.
Cleveland vs. Los Angeles Chargers
Miami vs. Tampa Bay
Minnesota vs. Detroit
Now I know a lot of people like to play matchups at the defense position in fantasy football so if you’re looking for a diamond in the rough at defense this week pick up and start the Vikings defense who has a juicy matchup against a struggling Lions football team.
I had a lot of fun writing this and I hope all of my week 5 start/sit advice helps everyone. I’ll be back next week with more fantasy start/sit advice.
