In Games 2 and 3 around the playoffs, we saw some new faces in goal for some teams. Due to various reasons, teams have switched it up in goal.
In Florida, Sergei Bobrovsky played Game 1 in the 5-4 loss. After that, Chris Dreidger came in for Game 2 in the 3-1 loss to the Lightning. Dreidger and Brobovsky shared duties in a 6-5 Game 3 win and then Dreidger again faced the defending champions in Game 4 on Saturday in a 6-2 loss. Rookie goalie, Spencer Knight, could get the start in Game 5 as the Panthers look to find a consistent winner in goal.
In Washington, we have had a different goalie start each game. Ilya Samsonov was on COVID protocol and was unavailable until Game 3 where he had an excellent game with an unfortunate ending in double overtime.
The New York Islanders used both goalies as Semyon Varlamov was unable to play game one due to a lower-body injury. Ilya Sorokin had a very fine Game 1, helping his team to an overtime win. Varlamov came into Game 2 with what is probably a disappointing start by his standards but made up for it throughout the rest of the game. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough and the Penguins were able to hold on to tie the series.
What happens next as the revolving door between the pipes for several teams continues to turn.
