2021 NHL | Goalie Usage High

This season in the NHL is probably the most unusual in the history of the league. We have a 56 game regular season with no travel outside of divisions and minimal fans allowed in attendance.

The most interesting thing about this season is the new concept of a taxi squad. Each team is allowed to carry between 4 and 6 players on their roster in case of a COVID outbreak within the team. Now teams are carrying at least 3 goalie with them for practices and traveling.

Because of various reasons, along with the ability to have a taxi squad, teams are using far more goalies in one season than usual. Not only is it depth pieces filling in for a game, Some young goalies are making NHL debuts. Some examples include Spencer Knight, Jeremy Swayman, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Stuart Skinner, Ivan Prosvetov, Filip Gustavsson, and plenty others under the age of 23.

In a typical season, an NHL team might use three goalies. Ideally nobody gets hurt and they only use two goalies in a season. Sometimes, one will be injured at one point and a call up will be needed. Rarely will a team use 4 goalies in one season. That would imply that two of their top goalies would be hurt at the same time.

With COVID protocols, and having a taxi squad, these patterns are completely different. Below is a list of each team and how many goalies have appeared in a game this year. Note, there is some overlap due to trades including David Rittich, Jonas Johansson, and Devan Dubnyk.

Totals for 2020-2021 Season
