Senators goalie Matt Murray suffered an injury on Saturday night. That night, Senators forward Artem Anisimov was a healthy scratch. He ended up dressing into Anton Forsberg’s gear to serve as the emergency backup in the extreme case that Marcus Hogberg went down.
Despite the funny chain of events on Saturday night, The senators have three Injured goalies on their depth chart. Anton Forsberg, Joey Daccord, and Matt Murray. Forsberg is likely to be the earliest to return but the Senators will have to play a number of games with Marcus Hogberg, and Filip Gustavsson.
They are both still technically rookies. Hogberg has 40 career NHL games while Gustavsson has 4. Ottawa using its depth early on in the season has allowed them to trust in their lesser experienced goaltenders when the situation demands it.
Now, the situation might demand it because there is a big chance that Matt Murray could now be out for the rest of the season, according to head coach DJ Smith.
The Senators sit at last place in the Northern Division. With 0 games left in the season, it is highly unlikely they will climb up. All they can do is prepare for the future, using their young goalies is a great way to do that.
