The final days before the trade deadline saw some interesting movement of goaltending. Only three goalies were involved in trades at this year’s deadline.
The biggest move was the Calgary Flames trading David Rittich to Toronto in exchange for a 2022 3rd round draft pick.
The other big move was the San Jose Sharks trading away Devan Dubnyk in exchange for a 5th round draft pick and Greg Pateryn. A defenseman who only played 8 NHL games spending most of the season on Colorado’s taxi squad or in the AHL.
With this move, the Avalanche will gain another goalie in the depth chart despite acquiring Jonas Johanson about a month prior. With the absence of Pavel Francouz, the Avalanche were clearly in high demand for somebody to back up Philip Grubauer.
It looked like the Sharks were fine with a goalie leaving their depth chart without one going in. They are but were able to get a possible future goaltender two days later from the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Sharks got the rights to G Magnus Chrona in exchange for Fredrik Claesson, a defenseman who spent most of the season on the Lightning’s taxi squad.
