The black and gold brand for WWE is officially moving from Wednesday nights to Tuesday nights. Both WWE and NBC Universal have signed a huge deal that will keep NXT on the USA Network and beginning Tuesday April 13th, WWE NXT makes their debut on that Tuesday night.
WWE executive Vice President of global talent strategy and developmental Paul Levesque (Triple H) opened up about the show moving to a different evening to Variety where he discussed why a decision had to be made to have NXT’s show airing on Wednesdays because they needed to keep things going on a consistent level. One reason, Levesque mentioned, was with its original time slot on the WWE Network. For everyone involved they feel the program has firmly been established on cable and moving is less of an issue.
Levesque said this, “We now feel we’re in a good place where we can move that consistent fan base over to Tuesdays.” He continued, “We believe they’ll follow us. That way we can grow the brand more given the lead from Monday Night Raw,’ which we’ve seen in the past.”
WWE NXT has always been very popular as well as successful and has enjoyed such a great following even prior to having a show on the USA Network, their momentum has got bigger since the first initial debut on Wednesdays. Along with Raw and Smackdown, NXT is one of WWE’s three weekly shows that currently airs.
“We are incredibly proud of our three-decade partnership with WWE and in extending USA’s NXT deal and we are further establishing our portfolio as an unrivaled home for quality WWE content” said Frances Berwick, chairman of entertainment networks for NBC Universal. “By transitioning NXT to a Tuesday time slot where WWE has performed well in the past, we are giving our passionate fan base more of what they love with back-to-back nights of exhilarating, live programming.”
We know NXT will air their TakeOver pay-per-view titled “Stand and Deliver” on April 7th and 8th and the first night will air on USA Network and the second night will be shown exclusively on Peacock, as many people know since the big announcement of a monumental deal by WWE and NBC Universal’s Peacock video-streaming platform to move all of the WWE Network content over to the NBCU streaming service. NXT premieres it’s show on the following Tuesday after the TakeOver event. Episodes then are available to stream on Peacock the next day.
Levesque said, “The ability for us to be on Peacock, a bigger platform where so many more people have the opportunity to experience it and to let it grow into something more, is very exciting.” He also stated, “And once you sample it, we believe that the product is something that people will stick with and become involved in.”
Here are some Per Nielsen totals, NXT averaged 847,000 total viewers per week in 2020. Special Tuesday episodes of NXT saw lifts of around 30% in both the adults 18-49 and 25-54 demographics.
