Galentines Day was made famous about ten years ago when Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope on NBC show Parks and Rec sang its praises. Galentines Day is typically scheduled for February 13th as a day to celebrate your girlfriends. It has been said that your friendships are indeed the greatest love of all and these friendships deserve nurturing as well as celebration. Get all gussied up in your finest athleisure, make yourself as fancy a cocktail as you can muster, and snuggle in for some great shows that truly celebrate the wonder that is female friendships.
Sex and the City – A cult classic that in my opinion should require no introduction will certainly perk up a snowy February week as you recall the days of yore when we could gather at the local club with our watered down, over priced drinks, throwing our purses in a circle while we dance around them, hands in the air. Follow along with this set of 4 women as they navigate dating, careers, and friendships in their 30s leading into their 40s and for one Miss Samantha Jones, 50s during the late 90s early 2000s. Episodes can be found on perpetual repeat on E!, on demand with your local cable provider, HBO max, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video as well as that dusty DVD box set in the back of your closet.
Girls – Bring our your inner 20 year old as you cringe and giggle at the lifestyle choices of another group of girlfriends living in Brooklyn in the 2010s. Judd Apatow produced and written by the lead actress Lena Dunham and her three closest girlfriends navigate life in New York City before they are financially and/or emotionally ready to handle it all. You can find episodes on HBO max, Hulu, as well as Amazon Prime.
Girlfriends Guide to Divorce – This show proves not all divorces will have a sad ending particularly with a supportive friend group. Despite the fact that these women turned out to not be a perfect match with the martial partner of their choosing they are able to find companionship with their girlfriends. A show based off a self help book series but produced by Bravo brings to life the importance of having a strong support system. Girlfriends Guide to Divorce is also available on Netflix as well as Amazon Prime Video.
Insecure – The genius of Issa Rae regarding the general insecurity of a woman in today’s world with the welcome addition of the struggle of black women in today’s society is brought to life in HBO’s Insecure. Follow along as she explores her friendship with her equally fierce and flawed BFF played by Yvonne Orji as they navigate their way through modern life. These women make their way through relationships, crazy nights out, breaking the glass ceiling and leaving shards everywhere people! Available on HBO max, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video.
Firefly Lane – A newer addition to your Netflix line up, Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl explore life together as lifelong girlfriends helping each other through problematic childhoods, complicated adult relationships as well as navigating the workforce. The friendship starts in 1974 as tweens, one an introvert, the other popular, and we get to be a part of their various life changes as they develop and grow through their 40s.
