Tyler’s Take | Royal Rumble 2021

Sunday night January 31, 2021 live inside WWE ThunderDome at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida! A date which will forever go down in sports-entertainment history largely because we as wrestling fans witnessed a pay-per-view event that has a long-standing in beginning the road to WrestleMania 37. I agree WWE gives its audience an opportunity to escape reality and provides us with a nice distraction from what we might be dealing with in our daily lives.

The problem has been, like most entertainment based and sports companies, a COVID-19 world has altered our normal lives and WWE has suffered without having actual fans in attendance. But that all begins to change in a new year and when WrestleMania season comes around. The brand itself, has become stagnant and at times creative, and that’s going to occur when we don’t have our normal visual of people shown in the arenas – and yes, I know, ThunderDome is doing a great job of at least having fans virtually be there which is a nice way to still hold for the WWE to keep that connection with their audience.

Now I said all this to explain the significance of what the Royal Rumble means to all of us, in the “WWE Universe” and how such events have given their canvass hope in a time where we rely on such reassurance.

Edge Wins the 2021 Men’s Royal Rumble Match

We all watched Edge punch his ticket to Mania in a heroic and most valiant winning effort by overcoming the best WWE had to offer. “The Rated R Superstar” overcame 29 fellow superstars to earn a shot at either facing WWE Champion Drew McIntyre from Raw or Universal Champion Roman Reigns who represents Smackdown. A few quick highlights for me was seeing a reunion of a tag-team in Edge and Christian during that Men’s Royal Rumble Match. I’ll never forget the look of emotion on Edge’s face when he saw Christian walking down toward the ring. Both men never lost a step if you took in their teamwork and chemistry inside the ring for this type of match.

Edge outsmarted his adversary “The Viper” by surviving an RKO and eliminating him over the top rope instead. It was poetic justice coming from a storytelling perspective with two of the very best to ever wrestle in Randy Orton and Edge. Edge had been the first entrant and proved to his competition and the fans why he belonged in such a prestigious spot.

Bianca Belair Wins The 2021 Women’s Royal Rumble Match

Easily one of the best matches of the night had to be the Women’s Royal Rumble Match. Some would go as far to even argue that this match should have main-evented and went on last, concerning the card. The “EST of WWE” had realized her lifelong dream of winning the Royal Rumble to take her rightful place at main-eventing and also headlining WrestleMania 37 in a few months. Ever since she arrived on the scene, wrestling for WWE NXT, Bianca Belair has proven that she has a special repertoire when it pertains to her in-ring skills.

Belair was already an established collegiate athlete while attending the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. There, she excelled by earning All-SEC and All-American Honors in track-in-field. WWE recognized that they had something special with Belair. After getting called-up to wrestle on the Smackdown brand, Bianca still continues to impress viewers watching at home. Belair had secured a lot of popularity early on from the get go. We can begin as early as last year’s 2020 Royal Rumble where automatically she stood out as someone who was a force to be reckoned with, fast-forward a year later – more of her journey has been completed and a dream fulfilled to a higher extent. Bianca Belair entered the 2021 Women’s Royal Rumble outlasting 29 other superstars to achieve greatness. She entered at number 3 and lasted more than 56 minutes, setting a record. She eliminated Rhea Ripley over the top rope to win and punch her ticket to WrestleMania. Now the question will naturally come up – who she will choose to face at Mania? Could it be Smackdown Women’s Champion Sasha Banks? Or will it be Raw Women’s Champion Asuka?
