It has been reported this morning that Chelsea are going to release current manager and former midfielder Frank Lampard for the club. Lampard, who joined the club after a stint as Derby head coach, is expected to be sacked later today.
With rather a lack of managerial experience, he was given the job at Chelsea after a season in the Championship with Derby. He led the Rams to a Play off final, in a season he finished 6th in the league, but ultimately fell at the final hurdle to Aston Villa. Subsequently he was handed the job at Chelsea the very next season.
Lampard has only been at the club for a season and a half and managed a 4th place finish last season. However, after a huge summer spending spree by the club, Chelsea sit outside the top 4 this season.
Therefore, Lampard’s job is on the chopping block and with rumours circulating that his replacement has already been selected, it seems to be a question of when not if.
Lampard oversaw a 3-1 victory in the FA Cup this weekend against Luton, in which Tammy Abraham scored a hat trick. But the result seems to not be enough to save himself from an early exit at Stamford Bridge.
The manager thought to replace the club legend is former PSG coach, Thomas Tuchel. The German coach has had previous experience apart from PSG, as he was also Borussia Dortmund manager as well.
Although nothing has been officially announced, expect a full announcement of Lampard’s departure to take place later this afternoon.
