WWE Friday Night Smackdown Big Numbers Christmas Night

WWE Friday Night Smackdown on Fox proved to be successful in the ratings, the blue brand was able to reach over 3 million people watching it on Christmas Night. Overnight ratings are in and the show did not disappoint. This episode of Smackdown drew an impressive average of 3.336 million in viewership, that number went up from last week’s episode that was reported to have an average of 1.030 million viewers on Fox Sports 1. This is good and positive news for the WWE.

Here is what we know from the first hour. It had over 4.097 million viewers while based on reports, hour two had 2.574 million viewers. Smackdown did 2.053 million viewers in an hour while hour two did 2.004 million viewers two weeks ago. The episode from last night averaged a 0.95 rating when talking in the 18-49 demographic, which was #2 for the night. That number is up from the 0.30 rating in the 18-49 demographic the show did last week. WWE we’re putting together a star-studded show which helped with getting more fans engaged during the holiday. The match card for the program included Universal Champion Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens inside a Steel Cage which had Smackdown open with a big main-event. It felt a rematch from TLC WWE’s PPV where Reigns and Owens went to war, the only difference this time is it was in a steel cage. Many think a spike in ratings on Christmas night was thanks to the first hour airing after Fox’s NFL game between the New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings. There is no question this will end up as the highest viewed and rated show for Smackdown.

Smackdown also faces prime time competition for viewership from other popular shows airing on other major networks on Friday night’s including 20/20, Magnum P.I., Blue Bloods, Shark Tank, Dateline NBC, and several other TV series. Smackdown was just behind all these programs, which means people were tuning in despite having other options. It’s important to put into context that this was indeed a overnight number and the actual rating will not be released until next week.

Merry Christmas from the Buzz!
