The buzz surrounding Leeds United never seems to die down, whether that be on or off the pitch. Marcelo Bielsa’s side has entertained the Premier League fans since their arrival to the top flight and has challenged in every game they’ve played this season.
But many feel that the West Yorkshire side are missing a final piece of the puzzle that will see them become a major threat in the league. Well, following reports of a bust-up in the Serie A, Leeds have turned their attention towards a player capable of providing that.
Atalanta has been a team on the rise since their first Champions League appearance last year and looks to have the star power required to go far in the competition. However, there have been reports of a bust-up between head coach Gian Piero Gasperini and star man Alejandro Gomez, also known as Papu.
The Argentinian midfielder was replaced at half time during their 1-1 draw with FC Midtjylland in the Champions League and hasn’t featured for the side since. The alleged incident happened after the 32-year-old refused to move positions when asked by Gasperini and subsequently was substituted.
Gomez took to Instagram to write the following message to his fans; “Dear fans, I’m writing to you here because I have no other means to defend myself or talk to you. I just want to tell you that, when I leave, you will know the truth about everything. You know me well; you know who I am. I love you, your captain.”
This has to lead to the rumours that Gomez will be leaving the club in January, with one of the main clubs interested being Leeds United. Marcelo Biesla, a fellow Argentinian, has already shown interest in a few players from the Serie A.
Leeds will be looking to add to their dangerous frontline if Gomez joins, who can play in the number 10 role or as a winger. Although Leeds’ squad has several players that could potentially play in the roles that Gomez fits, the Atalanta captain is a world-class playmaker.
Nevertheless, Gomez isn’t the clinical finisher many fans think, despite having 5 goals in 7 games this season. The midfielder has 59 goals in 243 games for Atalanta but is more known for his fantastic playmaking ability. He creates space for other players and his passing in the final third is often inch-perfect.
A player who plays with his heart on his sleeve is something that the Leeds fans want from every player who steps foot onto the pitch at Elland Road. Gomez could be the answer to Leeds’ misfortune of dropped points in games they have dominated.
However, the Whites will have competition from the MLS to gain Gomez signature if they do try to scoop up the 32-year-old. Nevertheless, the opportunity to play under Bielsa may be the deciding factor if he comes to the Premier League.
