WWE originally planned to have their Chairman Vince McMahon make a return in the ring to wrestle at WrestleMania 34 back in 2018. The idea was to have Vince team up with his son Shane McMahon in a match.
WWE superstar Kevin Owens who currently competes on Friday Night Smackdown did an interview with Inside The Ropes and SPORF’s Kenny McIntosh from earlier today and Owens revealed WWE’s original plans for WrestleMania 34 was to have a tag-team match where Vince and Shane would go up against himself and Sami Zayn.
Kevin Owens was quoted saying, “ Yeah, that feud with Vince was really cool,” Owens admitted. “I wish it would have led to more, honestly.” But KO talked about who wouldn’t feel that way toward the possibilities of that kind of match with the McMahon’s. Owens continued by stating, “I think it could have, and I think it almost did.” I really think, at one point, there was a chance that it was in fact going to be him and Sami Zayn facing Shane and Vince at WrestleMania, which to many would be absolutely incredible. Owens explained, that Vince McMahon told him, “I can’t run WrestleMania and focus on a match at the same time.”
The match was then changed to Shane and Daniel Bryan defeating Owens and Zayn. Owens and Zayn would have had the opportunity to be re-hired to Smackdown if they had won the match. Both Owens and Shane began their feud in August of 2017, several months before the big event WrestleMania. Vince himself got involved a few times during the feud, this included the September 12, 2017 episode of Smackdown where Owens hit Vince with a headbutt after McMahon officially announced Shane versus Owens for the Hell In a Cell pay-per-view.
Owens said, “Vince felt like his best position was not to be in the ring, you know?” The situation was perfect for a Daniel Bryan return Owens pointed out. Bryan had got cleared medically and the storyline was already progressing. Bryan and Shane were already running the Smackdown brand together, and for Owens it was truly incredible to be a part of Daniel’s big return especially considering it was in the same building where Bryan won the WWE title at WrestleMania XXX, so it was great.
I know the WWE Universe may have wanted to see Vince and Shane McMahon reunite to take on Owens and Zayn at WrestleMania, but Vince had not wrestled since Raw on October 8, 2012 against CM Punk. They fought to a No Contest. Vince last teamed with Shane going back to 2007 Judgement Day PPV in a 3-on-1 Handicap Match battling the current WWE United States Champion Bobby Lashley. The match saw Vince, Shane, and Umaga lose to Lashley while Vince believe it or not was the ECW World Heavyweight Champion. The title was on the line, however Vince would retain the championship due to Lashley pinning Shane.
Vince McMahon could still pull off a match, but he felt more comfortable being behind-the-scenes running things for WWE. He knew how important it was Daniel Bryan returned to the ring, and he still made a few appearances helping further his son Shane and Kevin Owens’ feud. McMahon showed he is still one tough man no matter his age.
