Star Wars Release News

Disney and Lucasfilms went crazy with new Star Wars announcements today at Disney’s Investor Day. New shows, spinoffs and movies were all announced. As well as the return of a fan favorite character in the Upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi show. No less than 8 new shows were announced during this event. When you add in the Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi shows, that means there will be no less than 10 Star Wars series over the next several years. And they will all be exclusive to Disney+.

New Star Wars Film

Finally, a new Star Wars film has been announced, the first since the end of the Skywalker Saga. Fans have long waited to find out what direction the franchise would be headed after episode 9 and we finally have our answer. The new Star Wars film is called Rogue Squadron and will be directed by Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins. Patty Jenkins directing a movie for Disney comes as a bit of a shock as she is one of WB’s favorite directors. The film will be about Star Fighter pilots in the Star Wars Galaxy and is set to be released Christmas 2023.

Many speculated that, following Rosario Dawson’s appearance as Ashoka in the Mandalorian, the character would be getting her own show. And now it has been officially confirmed. Long time fan favorite character Ashoka will have her own show on Disney+, and it will be written by The Clone Wars’ own Dave Filoni.

The smuggler himself Lando Calrissian will also be getting his own series on Disney+. Not many details have been revealed yet but we do know that Justin Simien will be writing the story.

The Bad Batch

Fans have been expecting this show for a while and we finally got a teaser trailer during this event. The Bad Batch is a show that will follow the ‘bad batch’ of clones from The Clone Wars in the post Clone Wars timeframe.

Rangers of the New Republic

This show will be set during the same time period as the Mandalorian and will focus on, as the title suggests, the Rangers of the New Republic. The Rangers have been seen in a limited role throughout The Mandalorian.

This show is set to star Diego Luna, as the rebel Cassian Andor. Diego Luna first appeared as the character in the film Rogue One. Production has apparently already begun on this show and it is set to arrive on Disney+ in 2022.

The Acolyte

This show, created by Leslye Headland, is probably the one with the least amount of details so far. All we know about this show is that it’s a thriller set in the High Republic era of Star Wars.

Star Wars: Visions

This series is set to be an anthology show of animated short films. The 10 short films are set to be created by various anime creators and are meant to provide a new perspective on the Star Wars universe.

A Droid Story

This animated show is set to star a brand new hero, who will be joined by fan favorite droids R2-D2 and C3-PO. Lucasfilm Animation and Industrial Light and Magic will be developing the series.

Hayden Christensen Returns

In perhaps the biggest announcement of the day Disney announced that Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in Ep.II and Ep.III), will be returning as Darth Vader in the Obi Wan series. This announcement has long been rumored, but the official announcement is something that all Star Wars fans should be happy to hear. Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen have undeniable chemistry as Anakin and Obi-Wan and it is only right that Hayden returns to be Vader for Ewan’s new show. The show has plenty to play around with between the last time we saw Anakin and Obi-Wan cross paths and Episode 4. It will be interesting to see how big of a role Vader will play in the series.

Stay tuned to The Buzz as more details are announced about the Disney/Lucasfilm projects!
